2011-2012 SCHOOL YEAR WINDING DOWN!!!

Students and Parents,

We only have 17 more days of school left!  Unbelievable isn't it?  This school year has flown by, and we have accomplished much!  I am very proud of the work that our Team 602 6th graders have done this year, and hope that they will continue to accomplish great things in our final days in school.

Parents, we are currently reading our classroom novel, "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowery.  It is an amazing book that takes place during the Holocaust.  In the last few weeks our students have learned a tremendous amount about the Holocaust.

We will  be starting our week long Holocaust project on next Monday, which will include the students designing their own Holocaust jewelry, among other things.

The students, also, received new vocabulary words this week.  These words were 14 "confusing words" that they should be familiar with, and have a grasp on, before moving on to 7th grade.

I hope you all have enjoyed the school year, and as always, "Happy Reading!"

BOOK TALK SCHEDULE

Parents and Friends,

As discussed on our class syllabus and at Open House last evening, Book Talks will be scheduled.  Students will be given the opportunity to choose the date(s) they want.  A calendar of the scheduled Book Talks will be posted in the classroom to serve as a reminder to the students.  It is the student's responsibility to be aware of and ready for Book Talk dates and deadlines.  Book Talks will count as 2 test grades.

Students have had their first trips to the library already, so all should have a book to complete reading, logging and book talks on.

Book Talk Deadlines:  October 28th, January 27th and April 27th.

Happy Reading and Writing,

K. Jones

Book Talk Instructions - Team 602

Hello students and parents, Our LAST Book Talk for this school year is due before May 10th. This will not be our ordinary book talks of past. For this last book talk, the requirements are: 1. The students must research a career field that they are interested in. (No Sports allowed!) 2. After researching their career choices, each student must create their own book about their career, and then 3.Each student must present a book talk about their book. This PROJECT will count as a Research grade (200 pts) and a Book Talk grade (200 pts) - - so in all, this final book talk counts as FOUR test grades. The students have a choice of whether to create a powerpoint slideshow to go along with their presentation or create a photostory, but again, the use of technology is a REQUIREMENT for this project. For those students who would like to create a photostory, I will provide them with written instructions on how to download the software (free of charge) and instructions on how to use it. Each book must contain an original Book Cover with Title and Author, created by the student; a Table of Contents; and at least 8 pages of print about the career field divided into 4 sections: 1) Why I Chose this Career Field 2) Career Field Educational & Aptitude Requirements (to include colleges or institutions where you can study to enter the field) 3) Future Jobs Outlook in the field and, 4) Glossary of Important Terms related to the Career Field. If you have any questions about this assignment, please feel free to contact me. Happy Reading, K. Jones Team 602 Language Arts and Reading
